SmartUpdate for operator

Description

It would be very nice if the Operator itself would be upgraded automatically with similar technology to SmartUpdate.

 

Right now the databases are updated automatically. but the Operator has to be updated manually.

I agree that it should be taken to a higher level. We have instructions to upgrade operators and have never heard of it being a blocker. New versions adoption trends seem quite solid.

 

I will close it for now, unless there is strong objection and need in the community.

Problem is that not everyone uses these apps and we are seeing outdated versions of the operator. And with current active development stage when almost each new versions introduces major chances we need a very simple way to upgrade the operator.

It maybe not the automatic update but reminder that new version of the operator is available and instructions on how to upgrade it.

In kubernetes world such things solved by some high-level apps, like RedHat Operator Lifecycle Manager (OLM) or some high-level DBaaS software.
