This is my hack patch to get 5.6 working. I have 60+ 5.6 mysql servers that I’m converting to 8.0 and I need this support.

Thank you for the report.
This issue is repeated only when MySQL is 5.6.
Verified as described.

The GRANT produced by pt-show-grants above is invalid against MySQL 8.0. pt-show-grants should be supplying the proper ‘CREATE USER ..’ followed by ‘GRANT …’
